Makassan visitors
Muslim trepang fishermen from Makassar sail to Arnhem Land each year and trade with Yolngu people, long before 1788.
1866
The cameleers
Muslim cameleers from Afghanistan and British India open up the outback, carrying supplies and the mail across the desert.
1880s
Marree
Cameleers build a small mosque of mud and bush timber at Marree, South Australia: the first in the country.
1887
Broken Hill
A corrugated-iron mosque goes up in Broken Hill. It still stands today.
1889
Adelaide Mosque
The oldest mosque still in daily use in Australia.
