Become a Muslim

It is simpler than you think.

Becoming a Muslim is one of the most peaceful, profound moments of a person's life - and one of the easiest acts you can do. Below is what it actually involves, in plain English, with no pressure.

The Shahadah - Declaration of Faith

Two short sentences. That is all it takes.

"Ash-hadu an la ilaha illa Allah."

I bear witness that there is nothing worthy of worship except Allah (Almighty God).

"Wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan abduhu wa rasuluh."

And I bear witness that Muhammad (peace be upon him) is His servant and His Messenger.

Say these two sentences with sincerity, with the intention to enter Islam, and you are a Muslim. Allah is your witness.

How to take it

Three small steps. No clergy required.

You can take the Shahadah anywhere - at home, alone, in a moment of quiet. There are no popes, priests or vicars in Islam. It is between you and Allah.

1

Form the intention

In Islam, every action begins with intention. Quietly intend in your heart to become a Muslim - to enter Islam and follow its way.

2

Say the Shahadah

Speak the two sentences above out loud, with sincerity. Witnesses are not required - though many find it beautiful to have a Muslim brother or sister hear it.

Common questions

The questions people ask us most.

Short, honest answers to the things you might be wondering about right now.

Do I have to tell everyone - friends, family?

That is entirely up to you. You do not need to tell anyone until you feel strong enough yourself.

We do not suggest you hide it or lie about it. Just take your time. Often, others will notice you becoming kinder and more peaceful before you ever say a word - and that is a beautiful way for them to come to ask the question.

Do I become a Sunni or a Shia?

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) did not call himself Sunni or Shia. Just call yourself a Muslim and follow the Prophet (PBUH). That is enough.

Why do Muslims say 'revert' instead of 'convert'?

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught that every child is born in a natural state of submission to God. So when someone becomes a Muslim, they are returning to their original nature - reverting, not converting.

Do I have to change everything after I revert?

Not much. Just start with the prayer. As your faith and love for Allah grow, you will naturally want to do more. Always at your own pace.

Islam was revealed in stages over 23 years. Please do not try to do everything at once.

Aren't there lots of rules?

The 'rules' are there to help you draw closer to Allah by doing what is good and avoiding what harms you. Bad things take you away from God.

Prioritise the important ones first. At the beginning, only the prayer is essential. A knowledgeable person can guide you on what comes next.

Is praying difficult? Do I have to pray in Arabic?

Personal supplication (asking Allah for anything) can be done in any language, any time.

The five daily prayers (Salah) are done in Arabic, but there is an easier option until you learn. While standing, bowing and prostrating, you can repeat short, simple phrases like:

La ilaha illallah - There is nothing worthy of worship except Allah

Subhan Allah - All glory is for Allah

Al-hamdu lillah - All praise and thanks are for Allah

Do I need to go to a mosque or see a priest to convert?

No. There is no clergy in Islam - no popes, priests or vicars. It is a direct, one-to-one relationship between you and Allah.

You can take your Shahadah anywhere, at any time. iERA Australia is here when you are ready - to celebrate it with you, send you a free gift, and walk with you through the first steps.

Is it actually difficult to become a Muslim?

No. It is genuinely one of the simplest acts a human being can do.

Over 1.9 billion people are Muslim today, and Islam is the fastest-growing religion in the world. You are not alone.
